The S.2231 vote is near: We need your help!

Credit unions have been making member business loans since their inception in the early 1900s. For many years, Hutchinson Credit Union has been making responsible loans to local businesses. In 1998, Congress placed an arbitrary lending cap on credit union business lending of 12.25% of assets as part of a political compromise demanded by the banking industry. In the first 90 years of existence, there was no such cap.

We've been held back by this cap ever since, having to limit our local business lending and investment in the Central Kansas area.

For the past few years, the Credit Union industry has been trying to get new legislation, Senate Bill S.2231 the Credit Union Small Business Jobs Act, passed to basically double our business lending cap and open up more credit for small businesses. Not perfect, but a much better option for HCU and those we serve.

Now, as the act is about to be voted on in the Senate, the Banking lobby is intent on selling congress on the notion that the Credit Union Small Business Jobs Act is bad for America. They are determined that this bill doesn't even get a chance to be voted on.

For years, the banks’ message to Congress is: “Help us, but not credit unions.” And, they’ve asked for – and received – a lot over the years. The banks took billions of dollars of taxpayer money through TARP. They were given access to even more taxpayer money to lend to small businesses. Banks have benefited from Congressional action and taxpayer subsidy, and they will be back for more.

The opportunities for Congress to help the banks – big and small – never end.

But, the banking lobbyists are now asking Congress to oppose expanded access to capital for small businesses. They want Congress to oppose legislation (S. 2231) that will make $13 billion in credit available to small businesses and help them create more than 140,000 new jobs in the first year. They oppose legislation that helps Americans and doesn't cost taxpayers a dime.

Now, it’s time for Congress to make sure credit unions can continue to lend to their small business members. Help our local economy and help Hutchinson Credit Union. Please support the Credit Union Small Business Jobs Act, S.2231 and let your senators know you would like them to vote yes on this important legislation. Call or email their offices today and let your voice be heard.
