Application Deadline: July 1, 2013

Entrants Must Be:

  • Age 14-22
  • An HCU primary account holder, or meet membership eligibility and join the credit union prior to submitting a scholarship entry form
  • A U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Not delinquent or in a negative balance with their HCU Account (I.E. "in good standing")
Awards:
  • Four -$1,500 scholarships for those who were primary account holders with HCU before April 1, 2013
  • Four -$1,000 scholarships for those who became primary account holders with HCU after April 1, 2013
  • Winners must be a full time student and a primary account holder with HCU (in good standing) at time of disbursement of award
  • Scholarships will be distributed to the financial aid office at the school of your choice for fall semester
  • Scholarships are for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and required equipment
  • For qualifying recipients, an alternate Coverdell award process is available.
  • One, non-renewable award/scholarship available per family / household

Scholarship Qualifying Institutions:

  • Kansas Accredited Colleges, Universities, and Technical Schools
  • Scholarships are applicable for any year of secondary school

Terms and conditions

Standard scholarship award process

  • Winners must begin studies within one year of the date of written notification of the scholarship award. If winners cannot begin studies within one year of the date of written notification of the scholarship award, he/she may choose to utilize our alternate awards procedure.
  • If the recipient later decides not to pursue post-secondary education, or decides to attend an ineligible college or university, he/she may choose to utilize our alternate awards procedure.
  • Winners must be enrolling as full-time students at Kansas accredited Colleges, Universities, and Technical Schools.
  • Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the institution in the name of the recipient.
  • Funds are to be used only for tuition, fees, books, supplies, and required equipment.

*Alternate Coverdell award process
For recipients under the age of 18, not attending a qualifying institution in the fall of 2013, the award can be placed into a Coverdell Educational Savings Account at Hutchinson Credit Union in the name of the winner. Coverdell funds may be used for some pre-college expenses, including tuition, room and board, books and computers for public, private or parochial elementary and secondary schools. Given in this way, the award may be considered taxable earnings by the IRS.

Hutchinson Credit Union has the authority to amend any of the above rules to ensure fairness in the awarding of the scholarships. Hutchinson Credit Union reserves the right to use winner's first name, last initial, and home town for scholarship marketing purposes.

Two scholarships, one for those who became members before 4-1-13 and one for those that became members on or after 4-1-13, awarded per 100 applications, up to eight total. HCU Staff are not eligible. Children of HCU staff are eligible. Any questions regarding the scholarship program should be addressed in writing to:

Winners will be selected from ALL eligible entrants on or about July 3rd, 2013.
The potential winners will be notified by e-mail, telephone, regular U. S. postal mail, or by overnight carrier within approximately three (3) business days of the selection. If a potential winner cannot be contacted after reasonable effort within two (2) weeks after the first attempt to contact him/her, this will result in forfeiture of the award and an alternate entrant will be selected in his/her place at random from among all eligible entries received during the registration time frame.

ALL FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL TAXES, AND ANY OTHER COSTS AND EXPENSES, ASSOCIATED WITH THE RECEIPT OR USE OF THE AWARD ARE THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE WINNER. Scholarships may be tax free if the recipient meets all IRS requirements. To view IRS requirements, please see IRS publication 520. Award is awarded WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, express or implied, without limitation. If the winner chooses not to accept his/her award, an alternate winner may be chosen.
