As of midnight on September 30, the federal government has officially shut down following the lapse in funding. This shutdown affects a wide range of federal operations and personnel, and Heartland is committed to supporting our members during this uncertain time.
While many federal employees face furloughs and delayed paychecks, it's important to note that not all government functions are interrupted:
- Mandatory programs such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid will continue to operate.
- Essential services — including federal law enforcement, the Transportation Security Administration, and the military — will remain active, though often with reduced staffing. Employees in these roles will not receive pay until the shutdown ends.
- Non-essential agencies and programs are temporarily closed, and non-essential personnel have been furloughed.
Regardless of classification, many federal employees may face financial challenges in the coming weeks, including difficulty paying mortgages and other household expenses.
Heartland is here to help. We are offering several support options for affected members:
- Loan deferrals
- Interest-free payroll advancement loans
- Temporary waivers on early withdrawal penalties from certificates for furloughed members
Additional solutions may be available depending on individual circumstances, and our staff is ready to discuss personalized options to help members bridge the gap until the shutdown ends.
Please note: These programs are available only during the shutdown. Members will be asked to provide proof of federal employment and notice of furlough to qualify.
One notable difference in this shutdown is that the Office of Management and Budget has instructed federal agencies to prepare plans for permanent reductions in force. While it remains to be seen how this directive will unfold, it could have longer-term implications for some federal employees.
Heartland stands ready to support our members - if you're a member that could be facing financial challenges due to the government shutdown, give us a call today so we can discuss your options.
