In a noisy world, Heartland Credit Union can be a steady signal. On Thursday, October 15, we are celebrating International Credit Union Day the way we know best, by doing something useful for our Kansas communities: free community shred events at three branches. Bring your old documents to our 23rd and Severance branch in Hutchinson, our East Kellogg branch in Wichita, or our Newton branch, and we will shred them securely, on site, for free.

What International Credit Union Day is
Celebrated on the third Thursday of every October since 1948, International Credit Union Day is the one day a year the entire credit union movement stops to explain itself. It is a global movement, more than 400 million members strong, served by over 67,000 credit unions across 100 countries.
Here is the short version of what makes us different. A credit union is not-for-profit and member-owned. There are no outside shareholders waiting for a return. When Heartland does well, that value comes back to you in better rates, lower fees, and people who are still here when you need them.
This year's theme is Cooperative Finance: A Steady Signal in a Noisy World. It lands because the noise is real. Financial advice comes at you from every direction, much of it built to sell you something. A credit union is the opposite of noise. Same institution, same people behind the counter, working toward the same thing you are.

Why shredding matters more than you think
Identity theft does not usually start with a sophisticated hack. It often starts with paper. A discarded bank statement, an old tax return, a pre-approved credit offer pulled out of a curbside recycling bin.
Shredding is one of the simplest ways to protect yourself, and most of us put it off because we do not have a good way to do it.
Worth bringing:
- Bank and credit card statements
- Old tax records and supporting documents
- Pay stubs and benefits paperwork
- Medical bills and insurance forms
- Pre-approved credit and loan offers
- Anything with an account number, Social Security number, or signature on it
This is the part we like best
Protecting your privacy is not a product. We are not going to pitch you anything while your papers go into the bin. That is sort of the point.
Helping a neighbor safely get rid of a box of paperwork they have been avoiding since March is a small thing. It is also exactly the kind of thing we are here for.
